BTTB takes steps to improve services to subscribers

BSS, Dhaka, Jan 7, 2008: Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board (BTTB) has taken up number of steps to improve the quality of its services for its subscribers since the caretaker government stepped up initiatives after 1/11 to make the administration effective through stern actions against corruption, irregularities and mismanagement.
 
BTTB sources said, so far 369 officials and employees have been terminated or suspended and 59 suspended temporarily.

At field level 769 officials and employees have been transferred to ensure improvement in customer services and gear up the administration.

The sources said, among the important steps taken since 1/11 includes removal of illegal occupants of BTTB land at Karail in Dhaka. Identification of illegal VOIP business centers and their eviction. With the help of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)

at least 50 raids have been carried out in this regard. It saw about three times rise in foreign calls through BTTB. Action through a committee formed by BTRC in this regard have continued.

The sources said, since 12 January last, 58,965 line telephones have been extended. At the same time 15,150 international circuits have been increased. The BTTB has set up or extended nearly 80 kilometer new cable network. A total of 86 kilometer of optical fiber lines have been have been set up at Pabna-Kushtia and Savar- Uttara exchanges.

Between January 07 to June 07 a total of Taka two crore 48 lakh arrear revenue has been collected through repeated notices served upon parliament members and court cases.

The revenue incomes shot up since January 07 due to taking up of necessary action which saw collection of Taka 35042 crore more revenue during 2006-07 fiscal year. During the 11 months of January 07 to November 07 Taka 1622.47 crore revenue have been collected. To improve the customer services necessary steps have been taken so that connections are not disconnected if subscribers have paid their bills, reducing their harassments.

At the same time through computer ledger management have been introduced allowing the subscribers in Dhaka could collect duplicate bills from the web site and know details about the payment of bills.

Economy ISD calling system have been introduced in 30 countries in addition to 25 countries from March 1,07. Now, the subscribers could call overseas calls to 55 countries through PSIN telephones at the rate of Taka 7.50 per minute.

Besides one could talk on mobile phones in 55 countries at the rate of Taka 18 per minute and Taka 7.50 per miniute in mobile phones of 32 countries.
