EU cultural week kicks off in city Saturday, 05.05.2007, 11:07am (GMT6) The European Union cultural week began in Dhaka on Thursday to mark the 50th founding anniversary of the EU. The European Commission in collaboration with the Alliance Francaise de Dacca, British Council, and Goethe Institut has arranged for a number of events to run through the week to turn it into a cultural festival. As part of the EU week, Alliance Franciase opened a solo exhibition of pat-chitra, or scroll paintings, by Shambhu Acharya, an eminent artist of the country, at its gallery. A musical soiree presented by Mongal Mia followed the opening ceremony of the art show. Pat-chitra is an age-old popular art form. It has been practised since the 12th century in this region. Pat-paintings usually depict scenes from religious and cultural myths and on themes of rural life. One of the most popular themes of this art form is known as The exhibition featuring 25 artworks will remain open from 9am to 12 noon and 5pm to 8pm every day of the week excepting just 5pm to 8pm on Saturday. The show will continue till May 16. The Goethe Institut in collaboration with the German Embassy opened a show featuring posters on European life, culture, and economic and social development trends. It will remain open from 10am to 8pm every day of the week except today. The institute will also project films at 5pm every day. On Thursday it screened the film Kebab Connection, which focuses on Turkish subculture in Germany and the problems faced by young Europeans. All the shows will continue till Wednesday. The acting head of Delegation Francaise said, ‘Europe Day on May 9 is an occasion for the EU to commemorate the achievements of European integration. This year’s celebrations are special because 2007 marks the 50th founding anniversary of the EU treaty, the treaty of Rome.’ The three cultural centres are also hosting a quiz competition styled Passport to Europe, which is open to all. Aspiring participants may contact any of the centres during office hours till Wednesday.
