Bangladesh's garmets sector unleashes 3-year roadmap to make RMG sector compliant of international regulations

Wednesday, 05.09.2007, 08:15am (GMT+6)

UNB, Dhaka : Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has taken  a three-year roadmap to make  Bangladeshi garmets factories fully compliant of international regulations and standards.

Newly formed Multi-stakeholder Forum Bangladesh (MFB) designed the roadmap at a meeting in Toronto, Canada on April 16-18, BGMEA President Anwarul Alam Chowdhury Parvez told reporters at the BGMEA Complex in Dhaka on Tuesday.

"We'll get better prices of products upon implementation of the roadmap," he said, explaining the possible outcome of the plan. The BGMEA chief, however, admitted that it is a difficult task to become 100 percent compliant. "We'll do our best to reach the highest possible level," he said.

Representatives from BGMEA, BKMEA, BTMA, NGOs, trade unions, Bangladesh government, buyers and importers attended the Toronto meeting of MFB.

Anwar said BGMEA is preparing a strategy paper on the roadmap diving the 4,000 factories into five categories (A+, A, B, C and D).

He informed that the 'A+' category factories, numbering not more than 50, have international standard in terms of productivity and social compliance.

The 'A' category factories totaling not more than 700 are already socially and environmentally compliant as per international standards and codes of conduct. The 'B' category factories, not more than 2,000, are compliant with national requirements as per the revised labour code and other relevant applicable Bangladesh standards.

These 'B' category factories have average productivity rate, but are still competitive for international buyers, retailers and brands to source directly from Bangladesh.

Around 2,500 'C' category factories are complaint as per long established Bangladesh legal requirements, but might not be fully aligned with the recent revisions of the labour code. They work below the required efficiency level for direct sourcing by international organizations or do not have the full capacity for a full production range.
