Bangladesh's Anti Corruption Commission Chairman lashes out at media

Saturday, 05.05.2007, 11:01am (GMT+6)

Dhaka, May 3 : ACC chairman Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury Thursday fired a barb of blame on the media and said reporters tend to misinterpret statements.  "We have now realised that reporters misinterpret our statements, add colour to them to boost sales and create a wrong impression among people," he said. "They won't get that chance anymore."

Mashhud launched scathing attacks on newspapers and the electronic media after he faced a barrage of questions from the reporters who had flocked to the Anticorruption Commission to cover the day.

After a massive overhaul, the new commission had promised press briefings twice a week, but a month passed without one.  Mashhud seized upon the point and said: "Reporters make us remark on Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina and then misconstrue my colleagues' comments and mine."

"Try your best. You guys won't be able to create misunderstanding among us."  Asked to comment on the apparent stalemate in the graft watchdog, he said the commission was not stuck. "I am satisfied with the pace of work—if not completely."  "People should not expect more than what we have done in the last two months."
