High-power body meets soon: Move to curb soaring prices of essentials
Thursday, 05.03.2007, 01:20am (GMT+6)

The high-powered committee to control price hike of essentials is expected to hold meeting soon with the senior officials of the relevant ministries and departments to find out ways to curb soaring market prices.

The committee, headed by Adviser for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs and Information Barrister Mainul Hosein, also plans to hold series of meetings with cross section of people, including leaders of professional and trade bodies and importers

associations to exchange views to deal with the matter.

The Council of Advisers in its special meeting on Thursday formed the high-powered committee to control the price of essentials in the markets.

The two other members of the committee are: Adviser for Finance Dr AB Mirza Azizul Islam and Adviser for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Anwarul Iqbal.

Barrister Mainul Hosein yesterday told reporters that the committee would take action plan to control the market price after holding meetings with the stakeholders.

“We will try to control the market price at any cost as the Government wants to keep the price of essential commodities within the purchasing power of the poor,” he said.

The Law Adviser said although the duty has been reduced to import different commodities but their prices have not been reduced.

Sources said hanging of price list of essential commodities in each shop of Dhaka City Corporation owned markets would be made mandatory so that buyers could verify the market price.

Besides, the Government would appoint a number of monitoring teams with a magistrate in each team to oversee the market price and provide punishment who would violate the government rules.
