Bangladesh's new advisers express optimism

Thursday, 01.10.2008, 04:58am (GMT+6)

Dhaka, Jan 9, 2008: The newly-appointed advisers of the caretaker government expressed their hope that they would be able to face the current political and economical challenges successfully with united efforts, reports BSS.

Talking separately to the journalists soon after taking oaths at Bangabhaban here this evening, they also said the ongoing reforms in various institutions would be implemented smoothly.

AFM Hasan Arif said the main political challenge is to hold a free, fair and impartial election.

Hassan Arif said, “Our prime duty is to extend allout support to the Election Commission for holding a national election in free, fair and neutral manner, and I am optimistic that through united efforts we would be successful in reaching the goal.”

Major General (retd) Ghulam Quader said he is confidant that they would be able to face the present challenges successfully.

Hussain Zillur Rahman said, “We are going through a risky period. We are facing economic hardship and people’s eyes turn from political issues to economical issues now, but if we put allout efforts unitedly, we could face the current challenges successfully.”

Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman said he is confident about discharging his responsibilities and duties.

“I must not be in here if there was a lack of confidence about my responsibilities and duties. I came here knowing that my new job is risky,” he said at Bangabhaban shortly after taking oath.

He also sought cooperation from all quarters in finishing his job in a success.

“We will try unitedly. Then, let’s see what happens,” the economist-turned government advisor told reporters.

Without describing the present challenges for the present government, Dr Zillur said the present dimension is different than the dimensions before one year.

But he stressed some reforms in the economic sector.
