Golam Ahsan Jewel, Jan 9, 2008: In another much anticipated move, the military backed caretaker government of Bangladesh announced today that it is considering appointment of up to seven consultants for the Chief Advisor Fakhruddin Ahmed.
"Six to seven consultants will be appointed in the next few days," the chief adviser's press secretary Syed Fahim Munaim told reporters at the Bangabhaban.
It was earlier reported in the press that the government was looking for options to appoint consultants with State Minister level status to ease the work load of Advisors who hold full minister level status.
Asked to explain the status of the consultants, the press secretary said the government was examining the laws.
According to Bangladeshi constitution, the maximum number of Advisors excluding the Chief Advisor is 10. The consultants will be appointed as the council of advisers cannot be expanded because of constitutional constraints.
It is reported that the government sought the opinion of the the Law Commission on whether the constitution would be violated if some more advisers were appointed.
The government later gave up the plan as the Law Commission pointed to legal barriers to the appointment of more advisers, officials said.
The military backed caretaker government was widely criticised in the media for undertaking activities that go beyond their constitutional mandate of holding free and fair elections.
The government is criticised for expanding the breadth and scope of its functionalities well beyond reasonable limits given the limited time allocated for its tenure. It is expected that the increase in number of advisors and consultants will expedite the pace of work of the caretaker administration.
