14 Euro MPs for immediate withdrawal of emergency in Bangladesh Sunday, 05.06.2007, 10:48am (GMT6) Fourteen members of the European Parliament have urged the caretaker government to ensure Sheikh Hasina’s security on her return home. The European Parliament members in a statement also expressed concern over recent political developments in Bangladesh. They said, ‘For the sake of democracy, we urge the caretaker government to urgently lift the state of emergency, which has been declared on January 11, 2007, and which, according to the constitution, can run for a maximum of three months.’ They appreciated the initiatives of the caretaker government in fighting corruption, restoring order and reforming institutions including political parties. However, they said recent reports of systematic oppression and intimidation of party leaders under the Emergency Rule had caused serious concern. They mentioned that former prime minister Sheikh Hasina was initially banned from returning to her country after a private visit to the USA. Under pressure from the international community, the caretaker government lifted the ban after a couple of days, they pointed out. The European Parliament members said, ‘We believe it is imperative that all political parties and the caretaker government of Bangladesh work together to ensure the effective protection of the democratic rights of every individual— whatever their political persuasion.
